Louisiana

Parish by parish, Louisiana lives in the stories you tell

Louisiana is a place of bayous, music, food and families of every kind, where a good story is part of daily life. The stories you carry, and the way you see things now, are worth keeping in your own words.

Try it free for 7 days. Only you can see your record. Never public or searchable.

Which parish shaped you, and how do people there think a gumbo should taste?

Every parish has its own accent, and so do you: the songs, the sayings and the way you tell a story are exactly what ToldForward is built to keep. There is no polished version to write, only your answer to today's question. Keep going a day at a time, and the people you choose will one day hear Louisiana in every line.

Only you can see your answers while you live.

Louisiana

Your Louisiana, in your own words

Parishes, not counties

Louisiana is divided into 64 parishes rather than counties, and for many people here, a parish is a big part of what home means. Parishes have their own accents, their own festivals and their own ideas of how a gumbo should taste. Which parish shaped you? What did people there do on a Saturday night or a Sunday afternoon? The details you know by heart, from the church fair to the corner store, are the kind of thing the generations after you will treasure hearing.

From Acadians to Cajuns

Acadian exiles from Nova Scotia found a new home in Louisiana and a new name, Cajuns, and their traditions are still alive in music, dancing and cooking. At the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center in Eunice, the National Park Service celebrates the Cajun way of life with music, dancing and cooking demonstrations. Whatever your own roots, Cajun, Creole or something else entirely, the songs, recipes and sayings you grew up with carry a lot of history. Write them down in your own words, along with what they mean to you.

Swamp, marsh and bayou

Louisiana became the 18th state on April 30, 1812, and much of it is still shaped by water. At the Barataria Preserve, just 17 miles from New Orleans, you can walk into swamp, marsh and bayou country, with alligators and birds all around. If you grew up fishing, crabbing or running a boat through quiet water before sunrise, you know a Louisiana that is hard to describe to outsiders. Try anyway. The people you choose will be glad you did.

  3. Pass it on, one day

Your record goes to the people you choose, after a waiting period.
