  • Your words, unchanged

What you write is stored as you wrote it, with the date, and never rewritten.

  • A gentle pause

Your record waits at least 6 months before anyone you named receives it.

  • Nothing to perform

No camera, no microphone. Type, or speak with your own device's dictation.

  • Yours to change

Edit an answer, remove one, or change who receives your record at any time.

Name the family and/or friends who will one day receive your whole record.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Your Philadelphia, in your own words

A city laid out around squares

When William Penn planned his city, his surveyor Thomas Holme drew a grid with five public squares. The center square became the site of City Hall, and the other four are known today as Rittenhouse, Washington, Logan and Franklin. People have been meeting, resting and people-watching in them for generations. Which square, park or street corner is yours? Let the people close to you know where you go to sit, think or meet a friend.

New Year's with the Mummers

The first official Mummers Parade marched on New Year's Day in 1901, and the tradition still fills the streets to start the year. For some people it is a once-a-year outing, for others a year-round labor of love. Whatever your own traditions are, the ones you never miss, they say a lot about you. Write down how you celebrate, who you celebrate with and why it matters to you, so the people after you can picture every bit of it.

Where freedom was written down

Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell share a national historical park in the heart of the city. Locals pass these places on ordinary days on the way to work or lunch. Living alongside so much history can make you think about what you believe. What do you hope the city, and the country, will become? Which values do you hold most firmly, and where did they come from? Your honest views today are a gift to future readers.
