Portland, Maine

Harbor mornings and island ferries: your Portland, your words

Portland is a harbor city on Casco Bay, where boats, ferries and neighborhoods share the same water. The Portland you know, and what you think about it now, is yours to set down.

Try it free for 7 days. Only you can see your record. Never public or searchable.

Do you have a Casco Bay ferry story, and what were you thinking as the city got smaller behind you?

Portland keeps changing, and the version you know right now will not look quite the same in a few years. Catch it while it is here: the bakery line, the snowstorm walk, the neighbor who has been on your street longest. Your answers are dated as you give them, so those you choose can one day see this city, and your thinking about it, exactly as it was.

Only you can see your answers while you live.

Your Portland, in your own words

The island boats

Year-round, ferries run from Portland out to the islands of Casco Bay, operated by the Casco Bay Island Transit District. For islanders, the boat is the school bus, the grocery run and the commute. For everyone else, it might be a summer day trip or a first date on the upper deck. Do you have a ferry story? Who was with you, what was the weather like, and what were you thinking about as the city got smaller behind you?

A lighthouse just down the shore

In nearby Cape Elizabeth, Portland Head Light stands on the shore at Fort Williams Park. For many people in and around Portland, it is where you bring visitors, take photographs and walk off a hard week. Over the years a shoreline like that becomes a quiet keeper of things you never said out loud. What happened for you along that shore? A conversation, a decision, a quiet hour? Those moments are worth writing down while you still recall them clearly.

Bakery lines and snowy walks home

Portland is more than its harbor views. It is the bakery line on a Saturday, the walk home in a snowstorm, the neighbor who has lived on your street longer than anyone. Like every city, it keeps changing, and the version you know right now will not look quite the same in a few years. Your description of it, in your own words, will one day let the people you choose see this city as it was in your time, through your eyes.

What you will do

Small, steady steps that add up to something only you could make.

  1. Open a question

About a place, a person, a choice you made, or something you believe.

  2. Say it your way

Short or long, serious or funny. There are no wrong answers and no grades.

  3. Pass it on, one day

Your record goes to the people you choose, after a waiting period.

Simple, and safe

  • Private by design

Only you can see your answers. Nothing is shared while you live.

  • You stay the author

No AI writes in your record. It holds what you said, and nothing else.

  • A waiting period

At least 6 months pass after you are gone before anyone receives it.

  • Change anything, anytime

Add, edit or delete what you have written, and update who receives it.

After you

Your people can still find your words

Instead of searching boxes and old messages, the people you choose can ask a question and see what you actually said about it, with the date you said it.

  • Labelled answers

Each answer is marked Recorded, Related or Unknown.

  • No imitation

There is no voice and no avatar, only your text.

  • Their own pace

They begin when they are ready, and can stop at any time.

How we look after your information
  • Your record is private while you live: nothing in it is public or searchable.
  • You choose the people who will one day receive it, and you can change them at any time.
  • If you wish, a copy can one day go to a library or archive through the Historical Deposit.

Your first question is a short one

ToldForward asks one friendly question each day, and a few sentences in your own words, typed or spoken, are plenty. You choose who will one day receive your record, and with Archive Membership they can ask a guide that finds your exact words, quoted and dated, and never pretends to be you.
