Maine

Rocky coast, quiet woods and the Maine stories only you can tell

Maine is a place of granite shores, deep woods and people who say a lot in a few words. Your stories from here, and the way you see the world today, are worth handing down in your own plain words.

Try it free for 7 days. Only you can see your record. Never public or searchable.

What does the coast look like to you on a foggy morning in March?

Mainers are known for saying a lot in a few words, which suits ToldForward well, since a short honest answer to one question a day is plenty. No one reads it while you live. Over the seasons, the long winters, the neighbors who plow you out and the bright summers add up to a plainspoken record for the people you name.

Only you can see your answers while you live.

How it works

A few minutes at a time, whenever it suits you.

  1. One question a day

A friendly question about your life, your views or the people in it. Skip any you like.

  2. Your words grow with you

Come back to an answer, add to it, or change it. Each one keeps its date.

  3. You choose who receives it

Name the family and/or friends who will one day receive your whole record.

Maine

Your Maine, in your own words

Where the headlands meet the Atlantic

Acadia National Park protects the highest rocky headlands along the Atlantic coast of the United States, and the Cadillac Summit Road is busy enough that drivers need a reservation in the warm months. People who live here know that coast in every season, not just the postcard ones. You might know it in fog, in a nor'easter, or on a still morning in March. What does the coast mean to you, and what would you want someone to notice the first time they see it?

Lobster country

There is a reason people link Maine with lobster: the state has led American lobster landings for more than three decades. Behind that are early mornings, traps stacked on the wharf, boats with names that mean something to the people who chose them, and whole harbor towns built around the catch. If the water has been part of your working life, or the life of someone close to you, those stories are worth telling plainly, the way you would tell them over coffee.

A state of its own since 1820

Maine was part of Massachusetts until March 15, 1820, when it joined the Union as the 23rd state. Today the Appalachian Trail runs all the way from Georgia to Maine, and hikers come from far away to reach these woods. You may know them as home rather than a destination. Tell what living here is like: the long winters, the short bright summers, the neighbors who plow you out without being asked.

The guide

It quotes you. It never pretends to be you.

With Archive Membership, the people you name can ask a guide about your life. It answers only with your own words, quoted and dated, and says plainly when your record holds no answer.

  • Your words, exactly

Quotes come straight from your record, never rewritten by AI.

  • Clearly an AI

The guide always says it is an AI, and speaks about you, not as you.

  • Honest when unsure

When nothing you wrote answers a question, it says so.

Kept the way you would want

  • In your own voice, on the page

Your phrasing, your humour, your way of putting things, kept word for word.

  • Dated as you go

Every answer carries its date, so the way your thinking changes is part of the story.

  • Handed on with care

The people you choose receive it after at least 6 months, never sooner.

  • Text only, on purpose

No recordings and no images of you are ever made or kept.

What applies in Maine

How we look after your information
  • Your record is private while you live: nothing in it is public or searchable.
  • You choose the people who will one day receive it, and you can change them at any time.
  • If you wish, a copy can one day go to a library or archive through the Historical Deposit.

Start small, the Maine way

ToldForward sends one friendly question a day about your life and your views, and you answer in your own words, typed or spoken with your device's dictation. Your record is private while you live, and you name the people who will one day receive it.
