Connecticut

From the Sound to the summits, your Connecticut story matters.

Connecticut has a shoreline on Long Island Sound, cities along its rivers and trails winding through the woods. The life you have lived here, told in your own words, is something to hand forward.

Try it free for 7 days. Only you can see your record. Never public or searchable.

What did a workday look like for you, and which coworker do you still think about?

Connecticut has a long history of work, from Samuel Colt's factory on the Connecticut River to the old whaleship at Mystic. Your own work, and the values it taught you, belong in that story. ToldForward helps you record them a little at a time, in plain words that sound like you, for the generations after you to read when the day comes.

Only you can see your answers while you live.

Your Connecticut, in your own words

Ships and the shore

At Mystic Seaport Museum, on the Mystic River, you can see the Charles W. Morgan, an 1841 whaleship that is America's oldest commercial ship still in existence. The museum's recreated coastal village shows how people on this shore once lived and worked. What is your connection to the water? A summer cottage, a fishing trip, a ferry ride on a windy day? Tell it your way, salt spray and all.

Made by hand and by machine

In 1847, Samuel Colt started his Hartford factory on the banks of the Connecticut River, and that site is now Coltsville National Historical Park. Maybe you, or people you know, spent years in a factory, a shop or an office tower. What did a workday look like for you? Write about the jobs that shaped you, the coworkers you still think about and the lessons you carried home. The work we do says a lot about what we value.

Trails through the woods

The New England Trail covers 235 miles starting at Long Island Sound, and the Appalachian Trail passes through the state too. Whether you hike, watch birds or just love a drive when the leaves turn, you probably have a favorite path. Where does it lead, and who walks it with you? Your stories of these places can help the people after you find their way there someday. Mention the snacks you always pack, too.

Three easy steps

No writing experience needed, and no deadline.

  1. Answer in your own words

A few sentences is plenty. Type them, or speak them with your device's dictation.

  2. Write about anything else

Beyond the daily question, add any story, view or advice you want to keep.

  3. Name your people

Choose who will receive your record one day. Change your mind whenever you like.

Simple, and safe

  • Private by design

Only you can see your answers. Nothing is shared while you live.

  • You stay the author

No AI writes in your record. It holds what you said, and nothing else.

  • A waiting period

At least 6 months pass after you are gone before anyone receives it.

  • Change anything, anytime

Add, edit or delete what you have written, and update who receives it.

After you

Your people can still find your words

Instead of searching boxes and old messages, the people you choose can ask a question and see what you actually said about it, with the date you said it.

  • Labelled answers

Each answer is marked Recorded, Related or Unknown.

  • No imitation

There is no voice and no avatar, only your text.

  • Their own pace

They begin when they are ready, and can stop at any time.

How we look after your information
  • Your record is private while you live: nothing in it is public or searchable.
  • You choose the people who will one day receive it, and you can change them at any time.
  • If you wish, a copy can one day go to a library or archive through the Historical Deposit.

Your Connecticut, in your voice.

ToldForward asks one friendly question a day about your life and views, and you answer in your own words. It all stays private while you live, and you decide who will receive it.
