A city named for a rock by the river, and a story that is yours.
Little Rock takes its name from a rock outcropping on the Arkansas River, which French explorer Bénard de la Harpe is said to have called la petite roche, the little rock, in 1722. The city has come a long way since then, and you have watched part of that journey.

A question for you
When have you seen someone in Little Rock do the right thing, even though it cost them?
Courage often looks ordinary up close, and so does a life well lived. Your view of how Little Rock has changed, from the corner store to the porch where a neighbor always waved, is a record no history book will hold. Begin keeping it now, a question a day, so your thinking about these years can be read one day in your own plain words.
Only you can see your answers while you live.
Little Rock, Arkansas
Your Little Rock, in your own words
From a post office to a city
A post office named Little Rock opened in March 1820, back when the city was only a beginning. Every place starts small, and so does every life story. What is the earliest thing you remember about this city? A street, a store, a smell from a bakery, a song on the radio? Write about the places that hold your memories, and about the friends, neighbors and loved ones you shared them with.
Courage at Central High
In September 1957, nine Black students who became known as the Little Rock Nine entered Little Rock Central High School on their third try, escorted by federal troops. It is still a working high school, and the only one designated a National Historic Site. Courage often looks ordinary up close. When have you seen someone do the right thing even though it cost them? What did it teach you? Your answer could mean a great deal to someone reading it years from now.
Your neighborhood, your words
Every city is really a collection of porches, ballfields, church halls and kitchen tables. Which ones are yours in Little Rock? Tell about the corner store, the coach, the neighbor who always waved. Describe how the city has changed while you have lived here, what you miss and what you are glad to see. Your view of everyday life is a record no history book will hold, and a single porch is plenty to begin with.
