Phoenix, Arizona

In the Valley of the Sun, your everyday life is the story.

Phoenix was named with the hope that a new town would spring from the ruins of an older one. Every person who has made a home here since has added a chapter, including you.

Try it free for 7 days. Only you can see your record. Never public or searchable.

What does an ordinary July day in Phoenix look like for you, from the early walk to errands after dark?

Phoenix plans its days around the sun, and you probably have your own clever rhythm for it, one worth writing down. A single daily question keeps the job small enough for an early morning before the heat, and your answers stay private while you live. Later, the people you choose can read about the city as you actually lived it, ordinary summers included.

Only you can see your answers while you live.

How it works

A few minutes at a time, whenever it suits you.

  1. One question a day

A friendly question about your life, your views or the people in it. Skip any you like.

  2. Your words grow with you

Come back to an answer, add to it, or change it. Each one keeps its date.

  3. You choose who receives it

Name the family and/or friends who will one day receive your whole record.

Phoenix, Arizona

Your Phoenix, in your own words

Built on ancient canals

Long before Phoenix, the Hohokam people dug irrigation canals by hand along the Salt and Gila rivers and farmed the desert. You can learn their story at Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park in Phoenix. The city itself was officially recognized in 1868. What have you built here? A home, a business, a circle of friends, a garden that somehow makes it through July? Write about the work you are proudest of, and who helped.

Spring training season

Every spring the Milwaukee Brewers play their spring training games at American Family Fields of Phoenix, a Cactus League ballpark on the city's west side, and they have trained there since 1998. Maybe you have spent a March afternoon in the stands with a hot dog, or maybe baseball is not your thing at all. What are the rituals that mark the seasons for you here? Small traditions tell the people you love who you really are.

Sun, shade and summer nights

The territorial government moved to Phoenix from Prescott in 1889, back when the wide Salt River ran through the Valley of the Sun. Life here is planned around the sun: early morning walks, errands after dark, the hunt for a shady parking spot. Tell what an ordinary summer day looks like for you. Someone reading it decades from now will find it as fascinating as you find an old letter from long ago.

Something to come back to

Not a recording. Your own words, ready to read

Your record is text you wrote yourself. The people you choose can read all of it, and with Archive Membership ask a guide to find the parts they are looking for.

  • Find a moment

Ask about a place, a year or a person, and see what you said.

  • See how you changed

Dated answers show how your views grew over time.

  • Always honest

The guide labels every answer and never guesses.

Built with care

  • Your words, unchanged

What you write is stored as you wrote it, with the date, and never rewritten.

  • A gentle pause

Your record waits at least 6 months before anyone you named receives it.

  • Nothing to perform

No camera, no microphone. Type, or speak with your own device's dictation.

  • Yours to change

Edit an answer, remove one, or change who receives your record at any time.
