Houston, Texas

Your Houston, in your own words

A city on the bayou

Houston was founded in 1836 by the brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen, on land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou. A lot has changed since then, and you have seen some of it. What did the city feel like when you first arrived, or when you were young? Tell it in your own words, with the heat, the rain and the traffic included, because those are part of your Houston too.

Many languages, one city

According to the city, at least 145 languages are spoken by Houston residents. Maybe you grew up speaking one at home and another at school. Maybe your table mixes recipes from more than one place. What did you eat, sing and celebrate growing up, and who taught you? Your own mix of traditions is part of what Houston is. Saved in your words, it can reach the generations after you, whatever language they speak.

Houston, we have a story

NASA's Johnson Space Center, home of Mission Control, is in Houston. Where were you when you watched a launch, a landing or big news from space? Or maybe your story is closer to the ground: a plant shift, a night at the hospital or a small business you built from nothing. Whatever work filled your days, it shaped you. Describe it plainly, so the people you choose know what your days were really like.

A guide that only ever uses your words

Someone you named asks what you thought about your first job, and the guide finds what you wrote, word for word. It is built to quote, not to invent.

  • First person, only in quotes

Your words appear exactly as you wrote them, with their date.

  • Third person, always

Everything else the guide says is about you, never in your name.

  • Nothing made up

If you never spoke to a subject, the answer is Unknown.

What you can count on

  • Only your own words

Nothing is written for you. Every word in your record is yours, as you gave it.

  • Text, never your voice or face

There is no recording and no likeness, so no one can make you seem to say anything.

  • Time before anyone reads

No one receives your record until at least 6 months have passed after you are gone.

  • Your terms, kept

You decide who receives it, and you can change your mind whenever you like.
