Rhode Island

A small state with a big shoreline, and a story that is yours

Rhode Island may be small on the map, but it holds a lot of life. The way you have lived it, and how you see it now, deserves to be kept in your own words.

Try it free for 7 days. Only you can see your record. Never public or searchable.

What did you drink after school, coffee milk or something else, and where did you go for clams?

Rhode Island may be small on the map, and a daily ToldForward answer can be small too: a sentence about the salt air, a few lines on the mill your town grew around. Held privately while you live, those small pieces become something whole for the people you choose, as vivid as a summer on Narragansett Bay.

Only you can see your answers while you live.

Rhode Island

Your Rhode Island, in your own words

The Ocean State, up close

Rhode Island puts "Ocean State" on its license plates, and with 384 miles of shoreline wrapped around Narragansett Bay, it earns the name. In the middle of the bay sit Prudence, Patience and Hope islands. Many Rhode Islanders have a beach, a pier or a ferry ride that feels like theirs. Which spot do you picture when you think of summer? Tell the people you choose what the salt air smelled like and who was with you.

Coffee milk and the quahog

Coffee milk, made with coffee syrup, has been the official state drink since 1993, and the quahog is the official state shell. Rhode Island food has a strong local accent, and most people who grew up here have a favorite version of everything. What did you drink after school, and where did you go for clams? Little tastes like these make a person vivid on the page for whoever reads it one day.

Mill villages along the river

In Pawtucket, Samuel Slater's cotton spinning mill set off a chain reaction along the Blackstone River that helped bring America into the age of industry. Whole communities took shape around that kind of work. Did you or the people around you work in a mill, a shop or a shipyard? The work that shaped your days is part of who you are, and it is worth explaining in your own words.

Something to come back to

Not a recording. Your own words, ready to read

Your record is text you wrote yourself. The people you choose can read all of it, and with Archive Membership ask a guide to find the parts they are looking for.

  • Find a moment

Ask about a place, a year or a person, and see what you said.

  • See how you changed

Dated answers show how your views grew over time.

  • Always honest

The guide labels every answer and never guesses.

Built with care

  • Your words, unchanged

What you write is stored as you wrote it, with the date, and never rewritten.

  • A gentle pause

Your record waits at least 6 months before anyone you named receives it.

  • Nothing to perform

No camera, no microphone. Type, or speak with your own device's dictation.

  • Yours to change

Edit an answer, remove one, or change who receives your record at any time.
