Minnesota

Lake country is full of stories worth keeping

Minnesota has more than 11,000 lakes of ten acres or more, and most people here can name the one that feels like home. The seasons you have lived through and the people you shared them with make a story only you can tell.

Try it free for 7 days. Only you can see your record. Never public or searchable.

What did you always eat at the State Fair, and which barn could you never skip?

A Minnesota winter teaches patience, and patience is all ToldForward needs from you. Answered in a few lines or a few pages, a single daily question gradually becomes a true picture of how the seasons here shaped you. You keep it private for as long as you live, and then the people close to you will find it waiting, in your words.

Only you can see your answers while you live.

What you can count on

  • Only your own words

Nothing is written for you. Every word in your record is yours, as you gave it.

  • Text, never your voice or face

There is no recording and no likeness, so no one can make you seem to say anything.

  • Time before anyone reads

No one receives your record until at least 6 months have passed after you are gone.

  • Your terms, kept

You decide who receives it, and you can change your mind whenever you like.

Getting started is easy

  1. Read today's question

Each day brings one question, from childhood to the views you hold now.

  2. Answer as yourself

Write as you would talk. Your answer is saved with the date, exactly as you gave it.

  3. Decide who it is for

The people you name receive your record, never anyone else.

Your Minnesota, in your own words

Where the big river begins

The Mississippi River begins at Lake Itasca, and Itasca State Park was set aside in 1891 to protect the basin around the river's source. Maybe you have stood there yourself, or seen the photos someone brought home. Every life has a starting place too: a town, a farm, a first apartment, a neighborhood. Let the people close to you know where your story started and how it carried you to where you are now. Even a few lines about that first place can mean a great deal.

Twelve days at the Fair

The Great Minnesota Get-Together became the Minnesota State Fair in 1859, and it runs for twelve days ending on Labor Day. For plenty of people it marks the end of summer. What did you always eat there? Which barn or building could you never skip? Did you show an animal, enter a pie or just walk until your feet gave out? These are the details that bring your voice back to the people who read your words years from now.

Paddles, cold mornings and quiet

Up north, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness holds more than a thousand lakes and over twelve hundred miles of canoe routes. Even if you have never paddled there, you probably know the feeling of a still morning on the water, or a January day when the cold takes your breath away. How have the seasons here shaped you? What do you believe about patience, hard work or helping a neighbor dig out? Your answers today show who you really are.

A guide that only ever uses your words

Someone you named asks what you thought about your first job, and the guide finds what you wrote, word for word. It is built to quote, not to invent.

  • First person, only in quotes

Your words appear exactly as you wrote them, with their date.

  • Third person, always

Everything else the guide says is about you, never in your name.

  • Nothing made up

If you never spoke to a subject, the answer is Unknown.
