Michigan

Surrounded by water, full of stories

Michigan touches four of the five Great Lakes, and almost everyone here has a favorite stretch of shoreline. The life you have lived between those waters is a story worth keeping.

Try it free for 7 days. Only you can see your record. Never public or searchable.

Which cabin, campground or Great Lakes beach felt most like yours when you were a kid?

There is no need to tell it all at once, and that is the heart of ToldForward: a few honest sentences a day, about what you did and how you felt, adding up to something lasting. Michigan's shorelines, cherry pies and shifts at the plant all have a place. The record is private while you live and goes to the family and friends you choose.

Only you can see your answers while you live.

How it works

A few minutes at a time, whenever it suits you.

  1. One question a day

A friendly question about your life, your views or the people in it. Skip any you like.

  2. Your words grow with you

Come back to an answer, add to it, or change it. Each one keeps its date.

  3. You choose who receives it

Name the family and/or friends who will one day receive your whole record.

Michigan

Your Michigan, in your own words

Two peninsulas and a bridge between

Michigan is made of two peninsulas, joined since 1957 by the Mackinac Bridge. Maybe you remember your first drive across it, gripping the wheel or pressing your face to the window. Maybe you grew up in the Upper Peninsula and still feel the pull of it, or in a Lower Peninsula town you could draw from memory. Where did you go to get away? Which cabin, campground or beach felt like yours? Your answers paint a picture no map can.

Cherries, lake breezes and long summer days

Traverse City's National Cherry Festival grew out of a Blessing of the Blossoms festival first held there in 1925. Maybe you picked cherries as a kid, or your kitchen smelled of pie every summer. Food carries memories in a way little else does. Tell your family and friends about the meals you grew up with and the ones you make now. Write down the recipe you never measure, and the story of who taught it to you.

Work that built a life

Lots of Michigan stories start with work: a shift at the plant, a season on a farm, a job out on the water. Stories like these say a lot about what you value and how you got through hard times. They also show the people after you what shaped you. You do not need to tell it all at once. A few honest sentences a day, about what you did and how you felt about it, will add up to something lasting.

Something to come back to

Not a recording. Your own words, ready to read

Your record is text you wrote yourself. The people you choose can read all of it, and with Archive Membership ask a guide to find the parts they are looking for.

  • Find a moment

Ask about a place, a year or a person, and see what you said.

  • See how you changed

Dated answers show how your views grew over time.

  • Always honest

The guide labels every answer and never guesses.

Built with care

  • Your words, unchanged

What you write is stored as you wrote it, with the date, and never rewritten.

  • A gentle pause

Your record waits at least 6 months before anyone you named receives it.

  • Nothing to perform

No camera, no microphone. Type, or speak with your own device's dictation.

  • Yours to change

Edit an answer, remove one, or change who receives your record at any time.
